Mirza Asadullah Khan (Ghalib)-27-12-1797(Agra) To 15-02-1869 (Delhi)
Interpretation-Ghazal-53
My eyes, even as they were opening, closed forever, just as a lamp flickers as it is being extinguished,
My companions brought her to my bed side at the time when I was in my death throes.
(My friends have made an ill-timed effort, and the beloved has showed ill-timed kindness.)
(It is a verse strangely full of vain longings.)
(The beloved's life-giving presence,which might almost have revived the lover,has been death-giving.)
